What is Quilling?
The Art of Quilling: A Timeless Craft
Quilling is an ancient and intricate art form that has captivated creators for centuries. While its exact origins remain uncertain, evidence of quilled paper designs has been found as far back as ancient Egypt, and the technique flourished in Renaissance Europe where monks and nuns used gilded paper strips to embellish religious artifacts. Over time, quilling evolved into a cherished decorative art, proving that even the simplest materials can be transformed into something extraordinary.
My own journey with quilling began in 2020 when a friend invited me to attend a workshop led by a local artist in Singapore. At the time, I had no idea what quilling was—I joined simply for the company!—but that one experience ignited a deep passion. That’s the beauty of trying something new; you never know what might spark creativity and joy!
Quilling is a testament to the power of patience and precision. What starts as a simple strip of paper becomes an intricate masterpiece through careful rolling, shaping, and layering. Every color is deliberately chosen, every coil and curve placed with intention, creating a design that is both delicate and dynamic. In the hands of an artist, paper transcends its humble origins, proving that art is truly about transformation and imagination.
